I like your larp combat idea, but I'm wondering how you'd suggest to deal with third-party players that see the pre-decided conflict and decide to get involved.
When I was running Changeling we had pre-rehearsed a fight scene between one of the players and one of the STs. The player didn't know who he was fighting until the middle of the game, but the combat was completely rehearsed between them beforehand, using boffer weapons and stage combat. The scene played out in game, the involved characters were all in costume, and the PC and the villain NPC started to have their epic fight in front of the assembly. It was really cool. At least until one player, worried that the PC seemed to be losing, screamed "Hold!! I heal you!" Then there was shouting about "The combat is under Protocol, you can't interfere!" and other arguments, and finally the fight got to conclude, but somewhat weakened by the break in the action.
Now obviously, you can warn your players better in advance than we did about the pre-scripting of combat. But when a obviously rehearsed duel, with no rules being involved, is interrupted it makes me believe that some larpers will interrupt anything of that sort. They, unsurprisingly, want to make a difference if they feel they can help. Any ideas on how to deal with the players that just can't get that now is too late to act?
