Let me preface this by saying that I'm the creator of Gamegrene.com.
I've never thought of RPG.net as a "competitor" in the sense of "let's make more money and then CRUSH them!". Perhaps a competitor of eyeballs, but even that isn't a clear cut ideal. When it comes to computer games, yeah, there is overlap. Everyone can gush thirty different ways about Max Payne, but it comes down to one thing: yeah, the game rocks, whoo dog on a stick.
With tabletop and paper gaming, most articles enhance the game in question, help you play the game better (either from a player or game master POV), or otherwise bring something new to the table (heh). In that regard, although our focus is similar, our topics, content, and subjects can range widely. Thus, we're not competing - we're just following our own inner light on what we think is good enough to publish. Maybe sometime we'll overlap by both reviewing the newest d20 lovefest - but most of the time, the content we produce is standalone and unique.
