Hi! I'm an actual transgender female (still in process) and one of only 2 transgender gamers I know. (I actually happen to be the only transgender transhumanist I know of as well, but that's a different story). After coming out this year, now all of my fellow gamers know why I only played female characters for as long as they knew me.
I just wanted to say that if you REALLY want some insight into cross-gender roleplaying, look around at TG websites - we have to do it for real and there's lots of useful information out there.
As an aside, when my surgery date comes around (probably early 2005 at this point) one of my fellow gamers fiendishly suggested the following:
Find a local vampire LARP in the city. Show up dressed as a female the night before my surgery and just say I'm cross-dressed. Come back a week later after I get out of the hospital and say "I'm so dedicated to this role, I went out and had a sex-change operation!" and videotape the looks on their faces...I suppose that could be fun! :-)
