Essentially these are "real" people taking part in a televised, 54day (or longer) popularity/endurance contest.
No doubt many of the contestants are playing to please the crowd. So they're playing a character for our benefit.
If if they were to play a RPG it would be a person playing a character playing a character.

Of course you are the person watching the person playing the character playing the character...
