A friend was cooking up a home-grown fantasy world that on the surface was fairly standard, but deep down had surprising secrets (for the PCs to find out, for instance).
One of them was that the Elves - who did not live in harmony with nature as much as constantly trying to change nature on their terms, which is why Ye Archetypical Elven Forest looks like it does - had evolved humans artificially from orcs, to try to civilise the breed into nicer beings (not equal to elves, of course, but altogether useful). They did this by importing what passes for genes in the world's laws of biology from elves into orcs. Half-elves and half-orcs, respectively, are genetic throwbacks that occur now and then - literal crossbreeds being rare. (An elf breeding with humans would be considered bestiality by the elves.)
Also, the "gods" of the setting, the beings who had created the world, didn't really care for humans at all (hey, they're elven genetic experiments!). Dwarves and elves and orcs were the important stuff, and they on their hand treated gods like I treat my landlord: with respect, but not much interest. They never understand the human concept of "religion" or "spirituality" at all.
