The human of Tolkien are actualy a very good representation of the adventuring human you just describeb that live in most fantasy setting. Even if human seem to drive away all other race of middle earth, the human of Tolkien are supposedly a race of adventure and passion. I come to this conclusion by analyzing two document of Tolkien: the Simarillion ( I hope I spell it right) and one Arwen letter.
3 rings for the elf in the sky
7 rings for the dwarf under the mountain
9 rings for the human, who are doom to die (notice the movie have stray from the original definition to get a simplified story)
and you know the rest :)
So, human are doom to die but why? This part is explained in the Simarillion where the God/entity/ancient(sorry dont remember exactly and since im not home I have no acces to the book) who created the elf had given man mortality as a gift. At first it seem like and odd gifts but you learn the meaning of it in one of Arwen letter. Indeed, Arwen forbid her immortality for living with Aragorn and explain to the letter receiver that she understand why mortality is a gift of god. She explain that being mortal push human to act and live passionatly and fully cause of the inevitable death they`ll suffer. Making their life even greater and more fulfilling then the one of any immortal (elf).
Finaly, human in tolkien are supposed to be the kind of the adventuring loot as the article describe in the conclusion. But, as Tolkien is also a very religious person (he was a very devoted catholic) it very hard to explain why he include those part that say human are a kind of wild passionate people. Well, Tolkein faith surely explain why all the other race are driven by the human rule as it also written in the article.
Well, maybe human are bit of one and the other at the same time after all :)
