I agree with Sandy that writing a column is good for honing writing skills. If you make an error in a blog you can just clean it up. With an online column, what you send in to an editor doesn't change once it's posted.
Plus you have a publisher, an editor, and a deadline which changes what might be considered as just another form of personal blog to a professional published work. You don't have to pitch a blog and you aren't held responsible for meeting a deadline with a personal blog.
Finally, RPG publishers do read the columns here at rpg.net. The pitch for the rpg work (PDF) I'm currently writing was accepted in part because of my online column here at rpg.net.
