Simple, goal-oriented games like MageKnight or HeroClix are good games to introduce kids to RPGs with. They have a simple tabletop play experience, without getting into too many rules like attacks of oppertunity or compicated character design choices. They also have characters that kids know about (HeroClix), or can create histories for themselves (MK).
I really miss one of my early introductions to the hobby, TSR's old "Dungeon!" game. That game had simple rules, but got across the concept of "explore - fight - get treasure - advancement" that's basic to understanding RPGs. That game also had simple, on-the-map goals, cooperative or competitive play, and a "winner" if you wanted to play that way.
Once kids understand the basic concepts, then they can explore the hobby further with more traditional RPGs that let you "play a role."
