I've been waiting forever for someone to write a column about this. THANK YOU!
I don't have any kids myself, but I'm in school for my graduate degree in Educational Psychology and am getting my Colorado state teaching license as we speak.
I've also been involved with The Adventure Education Company (which I blatantly promote whenever the opportunity arises), which is essentially a large fantasy LARP for kids set up as a summer camp program in Boulder, CO. The web address (and don't blame me for the no-frills aspect of the site) is http://www.adventureeducation.org. We don't specifically state that we are doing role-playing games because some parents have a negative view of that term. We prefer "Interactive Storytelling," but the camp is definitely a gateway drug to RPGs.
I believe the children are our future. Teach them to enjoy their imagination while exploiting broken rules sets and let them lead the way.
