 Non-combat Gaming

A non-combat gaming session is similar to a completely improvised one in that the vast majority of the time (like damn near always), the GM was far more impressed with how the session went then the players were. That's been my experience anyway.

The fact is that lethal conflict, in a rpg (or 1st person game), is fun. Roleplaying, which should also be taking place during combat, and investigation are also fun. But even if the genre and setting call for it, too much of any of the three modes of play will cause stagnation as one or more players become bored to tears by the one dimensional play experience.

Include all three elements (and more) and keep the session moving. Then everyone has fun.

Happy Gaming, =)
