Something that has bothered me about much of the discussion on the list is a complete lack of distinction drawn between sexist material and sexual material. Yes, much of gaming art features women in clothing skimpy to nonexistant, but then, so are the men. It has been shown that being surrounded with images of ripped men can be as emotionally disturbing to men as supermodels are to women. The question is thus: if it is okay for a game to be populated with testosterone laden men (which I must assume it is, due to the complete lack of discussion on the matter), why then is an issue being raised with female idealized forms? Now, it is understandable to dislike the portrayal of women in submissive situations. But where is the line drawn between sexual material and sexist material? Dear old Anne Rice wrote more material (coughBeautycough) which, if put on film, would be considered sexist at best, misogynist at worst. But for some reason, there is a double standard.
As another note, I find the argument against the portrayal of any but "realistic" portrayals of female anatomy, or human anatomy in general more than a bit absurd. To say that the portrayal of a beautiful woman hold other women to an impossible ideal says more about the poor self image of other women than the malign intentions of the artist, photographer, or costume designer than anything else. If the game is set in a realistic setting, then the majority of the people will be average, with some gorgeous and some hideous. This is the case with the art in realistic games such as Ars Majica and Harn. But most other games are a far cry from realistic, and as representations of our fantasy lives filled with beatiful, perfectly proportioned gods and goddesses. Nobody wants to look as an overweight idiot with mustard stains on his/her shirt. I'm sure I'll get the shit yelled out of me for this, but I do consider myself a proponent of equal exposure in games. However, I have little respect for anyone, male or female, who is so insecure as to spit such spite and invective at the genetically more fortunate. If one really is that upset by their inability to live up to standards, hit the gym harder, and quit whining. The fight to ensure equal rights for all, even lowly gamers, has far more important battles than preserving the fragile egos of people.
