In a similar vein, what do you do about a player – or even a DM – who takes out of game problems with another player and puts them into character?
Namely, there is a personal problem between Player A and Player B – or even a personal problem between the DM and Player B – and they use their characters in game for some axe grinding. Like abandoning the character of Player B, robbing their character, setting up their character up to take some kind of fall or even attacking their character.
Naturally, Player A – or the DM – denies any personal vendetta or problem and waves away their in-game actions as “in-character.” However, it is readily apparent that it is related to out of game issues. (For the sake of clarity, these actions are disrupting the game and spoiling the fun of every who is not following the vendetta.)
What do you do?
In my experience – sadly – the only thing you can do is to leave the game. Trying to bring this to anyone’s attention or openly, address the issue only exacerbates the problem and makes you a target as well. Then that is also my experience with players who use their characters for a soapbox from which to preach or for political ranting-and-raving.
