Before I start I would just like to warn you that I am a socio-cultural anthropolgy major at Arizona State University and am thus given over to ranting so this will probably be long article and chuck full of sociological metaphor so please bare with me, I would like to think some one cares about what i have to say, thank you. I would also like to say that this will NOT be an attack on Ms./Mrs. Hilda Doda as was the Uummmm...NO! article from July posted by a gentleman who might want to learn to speak english before he does irreprible harm to his gender with it(I appolagize for him to anyone, male or female, who was offended by that idiot).
First up I would like to make some brief commentary on the things I agreed with in the article as to belay any precieved hostility. I agreed greatly with the commentary on the presentation of women within gaming books. You would not believe how many times I have sat and ranted about the female fighter inexplicably clad in the imposibly tiny leather g-string armor with the suggestively placed nipple studs and crotch fur. I also agree that many times women are treated poorly when they enter a local gaming store. I get tired of sitting at store's gaming table staring at six male players who have no right to belittle women gamers since most of them still live in their parents basement and still refer to their mother as "mommy". I also get tired of them asking if every female character I introduce is hot and depending on how I respond will come up with such witty ideas as, "I bend her over the table and do her." I would love to have some female players if for no other reason then to have some one to smack the guys I cant reach upside the head with something heavy.
Now its time for the disagreements(oh for joy!). As far as how women are looked at when the enter a gaming store, I agree mostly, but to ask to be viewed the same as any male customer is unfair, your not a male and, to quote an unknown sorce, "I have yet to meet a man so dead who has not turned and said,'not bad'." Both men and women are sexual creatures and to ask either to not be is unreasonable, both judge based on appearance, men just have the audacity and courtisy to do it to your face, where as women do it behind mens backs while chating with their friend, an unfortunate side-affect of living in a previously sexist culture. As far as equality goes, my agreement depends on the type you are refering to, I agree that men and women are equal in the arenas of psychology and social behavior, the are not equal in the areas of physiology and nuturing however. Can a woman achieve what a man can physical, yes, but with a great deal more work. Can a man nuture as well as a woman, yes but it requires a great deal of conditioning. Just like with all things there are exceptions but they are not the rule nor should special allowences be made for either. I once moved out of a neighborhood when the local fire department changed the entry requirements for wieght lifting for women form 200 lbs to 100 lbs, I would rather not burn to death because firewoman Joyce couldn't lift my 195 lbs male frame out a window, thank you very much.
I would just lke to say in closing that I agree with most of what was said in the article and am glad that Ms./Mrs. Hilda Doda was not afraid to post it. I would apreciate it if Ms./Mrs. Hilda Doda would post a responce to this post as I am interested in hearing her responce.
Sincerely,
Daniel Brugman
