Good stuff. I'd never heard of the art cards.
In a similar vein, I've used "idea cards." They sell these things for writers, and while they are clearly geared for writing, they can be twisted to work for RPGs as well. They generally give you some idea of where to start, a name or an aspect of a character, something to use as a hook to bulid off of.
This also reminds me of something I used to do for Mage games. Knowing a fair bit about throwing Tarot, I used to play out a simple reading as the story progressed. And yes, this was before, but also after, WW came out with the Mage Tarot deck, although having the imagry already there in the books certainly reinforeced the idea.
Other than being useful for when you're stuck or need to cement an idea for what you can do next, this method was also useful as a concite for "chaptering" the game. Boom, another card goes down, we move on to our next segment. It added a tone that I liked, plus could provide useful breaks if I needed a segway.
Clearly it's not for everyone, nor for every game, but I think there are analogies that can be draw.
