I draw inspiration from a lot of music (in fact, I even based a character -- a Malkavian under the delusion that she's a Toreador -- on a song, Oingo Boingo's "Pictures of You".) But there are some artists and albums that I keep going back to, for inspiration. Some which evoke mood, some which have lyrics that just happen to work for character backgrounds! These are some suggestions, submitted for all to applaud or spit upon:
Anything by Oingo Boingo. Particularly if you like demented characters. They've got the lyrics -and- the mood.
Tori Amos works extremely well for mood, but one usually has to take a key phrase or two from the lyrics and toss out the rest, unless you're playing Toon and want to bring out Colonel Dirtyfishydishcloth.
Leah Andreone for angsty chicks.
Sophie B. Hawkins for sensuality or tangled minds.
Arcadia was a band that happened when Duran Duran split up, or so I hear. I like their album "So Red the Rose" better than most Duran Duran, as it has a diverse array of themes and a mood of intensity applicable to many settings.
Switchblade Symphony is always good.
So is Rasputina.
Sisters of Mercy works well for more modern and gothic genres.
I won't drag out the rest of my favorite goth bands.
