I use the techniques discussed in this article for all of my writing, not just game-related stuff. At the extreme, I once played a mixture of David Bowie's "Heart's Filth Lesson", NIN "Physical" (track 69 on Broken) and Marilyn Manson's "Cake and Sodomy" for 3 1/2 HOURS at maximum volume on repeat while I worked on a character's spiral into madness for an NPC journal. All of the players asked for copies afterwards - it works!

On a more even keel, I use the following CDs in a 5-disc carousel on shuffle for general RPG work:

5th Element Soundtrack
Alien 3 Soundtrack
Deep Forest - Boheme
American Beauty Soundtrack
Yello - Pocket Universe

For the unenlightened - Yello may possibly be the single most under-rated European band in history. Most of the band's albums are musical enough to use as mood music; the lyrics are cryptic enough to serve as inspiration, and the beats just rock.
