A village (family, whatever) is in serious trouble. But they're poor. Really poor. They send someone to the big city to try to find help, but nobody is willing to take the job on for so little money (or in the case of the movie, rice!).
But then there are the player characters - too young or too old to get taken seriously by most, or too poor. The village's representative asks them individually "will you come to our village and aid us?"
