It was funny you mentioned him being a symbol of the American midwest. This isn't really correct because as few people know, Superman started out in a comic strip in the Toronto Star. Metropolis was in fact based on Toronto in the 1930's and 40's.
Many of the characters such as Lois Lane were introduced then. His costume was always those colours, even back in his Canadian roots.
