being a classical composer, I have my own odd tastes, but perhaps these suggestions will be usable by others.

John Tavener (not to be confused with John Taverner)- Eternity's Sunrise. Good CD full of pieces with a bit of a spiritual/ancient music feel to them. Most pieces are predominantly choral. Very catchy melodies so possibly good for NPC themes.

Philip Glass - The Kuru Field of Justice, a song from the opera Satyagraha. This song is extremely sad, dark and noble. Like the a war-weary hero who has sustained great losses and injuries but has triumphed. Very powerful operatic singing with orchestral accompaiment.

Meredith Monk - Book of Days, a CD from the movie of the same name. A very unique collection of songs that have a strange fantasy/mideidval feel. They sound a bit like old Christian monastery songs but with quirky fantasy bent. Mostly vocal, really interesting.

Empire Brass - King's Court and Celtic Fair CD. This is a collection of the Empire Brass quintet, a bagpiper, drums, and more playing real mideival songs, dances, fanfares and marches. Perfect for any fantasy game with a historical feel.

Franz Listz - Dante Symphony. This is a 3 movement symphony which describes through music Dante's Divine Comedy. The first movement is steriotypical classical Hell music. Second movement is Purgatory, not as useful for RPGs. Third movement is a Heaven, with a chorus coming in eventually. Very beautiful, it makes me imagine glorious elven cities.

Hopefully some of these will be of some help.
