Personally, I don't find all this analysis of what hard-and-fast rules do in RPGs to be at all helpful in showing how RPGs differ from normal games. What I think makes an RPG truly different is this: if you take away all the mechanical rules, you're still left with something that's essentially an RPG. You can't do that with baseball; if you try, you find yourself either following the rules anyway only more loosely or else end up with chaos -- Calvinball, as it were. -- Pteryx
