The article was at the most "quasi-entertaining". I can understand the kind of satire which can be drawn as a direct line between groups such as homosexuals and roleplayers. This can be as easily performed as a line between airplanes and sexual devices (they both share common shapes and have turbulence).
The Point-> What were you thinking?
Lets check the list shall we....
(1) Role players usually join in large numbers.
(Though Homosexuals might also do this, so do church goers)
(2) Role playing is not so much about "escapism" as "collectivity".
(Escaping is more akin to locking ones self in a room and watching national geographic or playing computer games...
Collectivity, on the other hand is "joining" with a "group" to accomplish something. This is not unlikegoing to "work camp" to relay positive collectiveness for co-workers. Which I might add is often successful and though may provide a minute amount of escapism is rather more atuned to working together. Which brings ME to the next point.
(3) Role playing is about diversity.
...That is learning how others think. WOW imagine not all roleplayers think alike. Shocker huh. Its also a major mirror of the real world...I would never go so far as to say that role playing has SAVED my life, however I have encountered many crossroads in life that mirrored role-play situations, and I consider the foreknowledge from the latter life-savers (tounge in cheek) in that respect.
(4) Role playing is about Imagination...
...and this is most important.
Need bigger muscles- go to the gym
Need bigger brains- go to school
Need bigger spirituality- go to church
Need bigger imagination- what? read a book (thats someone elses imagination) take a trip (thats escapism, to use your term)...hmm it seems to broaden this you need some way to mix thoughts with others in a quasi-real yet unreal(to be imaginitive) sense and compress that thought process into some form of struggle or goal to broaden the perspective.
In fact that gives me an idea heres a new angle for ya....
"Roleplaying... is it like group sex?"
