When I first read the columns' title I went somthing like this: "Huh? You think so?"; but I was willing to let M. Mayer present his or her case. Then I read this:
"Both groups are mercilessly persecuted in High School and beyond. For both groups, the most strident persecution comes from people attempting to deny their actual inclinations or experiences."
To compare the kind of persecution an homosexual person goes through to that of the average gamer is not only incorrect, it is vile. How many people get beaten up, raped, or killed because they are gamers? Now, how many people have those things happen to them because they are gay? How many people do you know would be killed by their parents if they found out they were gamers? I don't know any. How many people do you know would be killed by their parents if they found out they were gay? I know some.
"On face value both homosexuality and gaming seem a choice of what to do on a Saturday night. (4) They both seem rather plain choices. Escapism and sex, even escapist sex or sexual escapism is all fairly straightforward ways to spend time."
This statement is simple homophobia. Saying that the choice to game on a Saturday night is the same as being homosexual is ... I don't know, the English language doesn't have a word (repulsive? abhorrent? abominable?).
"Homosexuality takes a degree of sexual awareness and comfortably that most people don't have."
No more than being straight. God, doesn't someone read this stuff before they put it up on the site?
"4 - Of course, now we can get into the argument of, since both groups have such massive cultures built up around them, whether it is right to speak the connection so plain (escapism=gaming, sex=homosexuality) for which instinct speaks no to but logic says yes, but let it drop this time, will you?"
No I will not let it drop. Logic says yes? I believe M. Meyer has no idea as to what logic is. Homosexuality does not equal sex, anymore than heterosexuality does. Any intimations to the contrary are nothing more than homophobic rantings.
O.K. I'm too angry to go on, though there is more crap in the article.
