Good column! Very insightful.
I would take issue with one statement, though:

I would argue that the hobby itself is FINE. RPGrs were always kind of a small demographic, and that hasn't changed. The INDUSTRY, on the other hand, is a dinosaur that is on the verge of extinction. Why do companies fail? Poor distribution built around flawed business models, inability to survive growing pains largely due to an increase in overhead...
Big companies either are bought out by BIGGER companies or fold, largely because they are topheavy,
Its the lean, little guys that will continue to carve niches for themselves in the hobby and will weather the impending storms. Pagan Publishing, for example, keeps their overhead low, their quality high, which will ensure their survival.
