In your article you make mention of games like tomb raider and such drawing the individual away from other gamers to there own private game world(essentially).
However it now goes beyond that, Indeed you are behind the times The newest thing to draw away gamers since CCg's is EVERQUEST and its soon to be imitated and updated followings. here you have a virtual mud(-multi user dungeon for those not in on the lingo) you can now visually role play together online and never leave the house.
The role-playing isnt quite there yet but.... its coming...soon.
This may spell the end of gaming in one sense and a new beginning in another.
With EQ you have differnet races, classes, levels,quests,etc.etc.very similar to D&D.
All muds have always owed there birth to D&D but you arent alone you can adventure with others or alone if you want you can explore, talk with the npcs(too a limited degree of course)fight, do quests, get treasure, the whole smear BUT,
they cant make you or someone else roleplay.
There are some who do of course, there always has been just as there are others who just never get it and of course before EQ there was ultima online now tsr or hasbro or whoever is coming out with NEVERWINTER NIGHTS. The specifics i dont have but the anticiption is great, supposedly your dm can go into this game and put in his own scenario- as you play.
So now we are looking at the release of a computer rpg thats visual, uses an established game system(D&D)and the gm can put in the roleplaying. So the group gaming comes back except of course you never even have to see the gm or the other players.I believe the future of gaming-in person-on paper-with minatures, will be decided by the success of this product or the success of the next. In either case soon spelling the end of the local gaming store or group
BAH! now ive depressed myself.
toodles
