Rivers are dark in the city too...

Nice column - the idea about the pitch black river with cities on either side being that dark reminds me of even what can happen in the centre of a town or city with lots of light.

Take Winnipeg, for example. If you are near the Forks (where the Assiniboine River meets the Red River), there are lots and lots of lights all around and over the mouth of the Assiniboine. It would be pretty much impossible to sneak up on a boat on that section of water (right in front of the Forks).

However, past that spot, where you are on the Red River, with Downtown on one side and St Boniface on the other, it is astounding how dark the river is, even though it isn't especially wide. If you are standing on the riverwalk under one of the bridges on the Assiniboine (where everything is brightly lit) and look out across where it meets the Red to St Boniface, you realize that there is a huge space in the middle there where you couldn't really make out if there was anything smaller than, say, one of the Paddlewheel cruise-ships. It'd be very easy to launch a small boat from St Boniface and attack a boat in the middle of the Red right at that point.

And that is one of the best-lit spots on the entire river. There are way easier spots for ambushes along the Red within the city limits, never mind to the North or South of the city.

Hmmm....more fodder for my Hunter: the Reckoning campaign... :)
