In our LARP we have made it a goal to have the Cast (NPC) costumes better and more realistic than the Heroes (PC) costumes because we believe the Heroes deserve a great show. We did start making costume a year before our first event, but it was worth it. In our old Larp, it was always "uh-oh, that NPC has a better costume than mine, he must be a ba-a-ad guy." NOW THEY'RE SCARED. We don't present any character at all without a believable costume to go with it.
Does take some work, but the effect is worth it.
