Handing your players each other's character sheets -- with no preamble and no discussion of boundaries in advance -- sounds like wife-swapping without telling the wives: likely to set them at each other's throats and your own.
The idea of character-swap isn't a bad one in itself (particularly with the alternate continuity you suggested) but springing it on an unsuspecting gaming group seems a little explosive. If I were going to do this, I'd give out some teasers the session before.
