As the original patsy in this grand experiment, I can honestly say it works really well. My friends were competing and "keeping score" to see how well they were doing to cause me to make certain decisions, and I was completely oblivious to what was going on until the very end. I was just happy to be the Captain!
Really, its very hard. I was trying to make sure the other players all had a voice (like a good captain would) and so I would listen to all of their arguments and then pick a course of action that I thought best served the majority of players. Of course, this is exactly how it was supposed to happen.
It's sort of an honor to be the Captain, and also kind of embarassing, in a "You're on Candid Camera, dork!" way. You feel like the butt of a big practical joke, but since it's fun for everyone, you come away feeling good about it.
I highly recomend trying this out with your gaming group.
