So why is a new character a better idea than re-motivating the old one? After all from the character's point of view what would he be thinking?
"Ok, I just finished my life's goal. I've made some new friends, who have helped me out and probably need some assistance in their own problems. But bugger it, I'm going home."

Have you actually had a discussion with the player as to what would be a worthy new motivation? I imagine that you have an idea of where you want the campaign to go, so why can't the character cruise along for a couple of sessions, giving others the limelight for the moment, then introduce something to give the character a new goal. After all, after achieving his revenge, Inigo then went on to be the dread pirate Roberts.
What did the character intend to do before revenge got in the way. Or was it revenge, revenge, revenge from childhood? Who did he encounter while gaining the skills needed for revenge? What cost was there in gaining these skills? Look what happened to Rambo when he tried to return to normal life for example

Try thinking outside the scope of the current campaign. When I plan campaigns, they tend to resemble Buffy seasons, several unrelated adventures near the start with more and more over time leading to the Big Bad at the end. One of these 'one off' adventures could result in a motivation that might not be met in this campaign but lead into a sequel. Example: The character's homeland could have a legend that a hero will learn the ancient lost art of swordmagic and kill the Demidemon destined to return to the world. The character finds a young boy who maybe the destined hero, but is not interested in learning any naff magic, he wants to be a sailor. The character is busy trying to get to the end of the current campaign, but occasionally has to defend this kid from seeming random attacks by demons while trying to convince him that he would really be better off trying to achieve his destiny. At the end of the current campaign you have a nice lead in to the next one, as the Demidemon truly gets interested in destroying the character's homeland.

Cheers
