Great article. I f...ing loved the film The Princess Bride, so the title of this article did it for me right from the start. Excellent topic. I think revenge plots are one of the most powerful plot tools a GM can use to form the basis for a campaign. I've been running a Harnmaster campaign for the past six or seven years which contains several powerful revenge based plots, and they are literally the only things holding the party as a whole together. I encourage my players to create characters as wierd as they might want them, and without the party's shared experiences and mutual hatred towards several opposing individuals and forces, they would not only not be a party but would probably have several internal blood feuds going on (because several of the PCs want to have their revenge against other PCs for past injuries and slights, and because some of the PCs have bugger all in common with the rest). I don't have a problem in that campaign with revenge plots being played out too quickly, quite the opposite. Years of real time have gone by without the party being able to have a go at their most hated foes, and the current revenge plot thread may not be resolved in my real-life lifetime the way things are going. Look forward to your next article.
