One way to allow the PC to get some early revenge, without diminishing the need for the PC to play the vengence card, is to stagger it out. Example: PC seeks the assassin who killed his father. After a few adventures, the PC tracks down and confronts the assassin, but in the process learns that the assasssin was hired by a wizard/priest. A few more adventures down the line, and the PC faces off against the wizard/priest... only to discover that the order to off the father was at the direct behest of a demon lord (daddy had some dark secrets, as it turns out). Finally, after yet a few more adventures, the PC gets to confront the demon lord in the climatic finale.
Granted, if dragged out too long, this could become both annoying and silly, but paced properly, it lets the vengence thing play out while getting partial satisfaction at working their way up the vengence food chain.
