I ran a very sucessful short fantasy campaign of revenge, where the players were told "your characters can be whatever you want, but each of your characters at some point in the past were wronged by the Villian, and each of you are seeking revenge." The players had to come up with how they had been wronged, and were quite imaginative - everything from a jilted lover (carryng her dead baby in a box...uurggg!) to a professional mercenary hired by a wronged noble. The only contrivance was having the pcs meet up and form a party.... other than that, it was a lot of fun.
