James,
Loved the column, particularly the way you described what different types of themes are and the difference between a theme and a moral, and your suggested themes at the end.
As a comic book collector and a fan of sci-fi and fantasy literature and movies, I enjoy fight and stunt scenes and characters using powers and brains as much as the next guy, but it's the themes that have kept me coming back all these years (I'll turn 50 in January)- themes like personal and corporate redemption, the ways of gods and humankind, good versus evil, sacrifice is necessary for anything top be accomplished, the use and abuse of power, growing pains, etc. These resonate with my life and with real life and give me things to think about. They make a game (or a read or a movie or TV show) more satisfying. I keep coming back to escapism that has themes. For example, I can watch Buffy and Angel episodes and original Star Trek episodes over and over again, while episodes of shows like Alias, The Wild, Wild West, and Mannix are fun to see once, but I often can't sit through reruns.
