It seems like your choice of examples rather illustrates the fact that these two options did NOT really belong in the D&D sphere.

Both careers would find themselves rather irrelevant in a dungeon crawl. The scholar detecting traps because of having read 'The big book of dungeon design' seems a particularly unnatural stretch.

As you said D&D was primarily designed around the concept of physical confrontations in a limited environment as such both your posited additions don't really belong...
