Why I love Hackmaster and 1st edition

D&D in my opinion will always hold it's place as the best RPG ever written and ever will be created. Long after Vampire the Masquerade has gone the way of 1d20 like Cthulhu has.....and thus all shall be consumed D&D with it's "sacred cows" will live on in basements and lexicon.

Unfortunately in my opinion Dungeons and Dragons won't survive under Wizards of the Coast's work as 3rd edition attempts to do the thing that I most depise in RPGs and watered down the very thing which makes Dungeons and Dragons so great.

It lies ironically in a "joke" RPG named Hackmaster.

The key to anything great in fantasy is not to be derivitive and while some might say an RPGs potential lies in replicating anything possible it in truth lies in providing you with ideas and an ambiance much like the popularity of Vampire: The Masquerade isn't in the system but in the setting and the concepts.

How many of you own copies of Dragon and Dungeon magazine? Handbooks? Monstrous Manuals beyond the initial compendium? How about Campaign boxed sets? I thought so....

Sure it's not perfect as possibly can be with all that you've described but the system is as flexible as it needs to be. If you want to play the Grey Mouser then play a bard or play a type of Wizard with thief abilities (called "kits") or just recognize the dang rule was for game balance just like people have ignored Level limits etc when needed but many swear by them....

It's still provided TRUCKLOADS more information for running a game than any other system and will continue to provide truckloads.

Hackmaster the RPG unlike 3rd edition which only provided the slightest nods in my opinion toward the beautiful world of fantasy AD&D built all it's own (mentions of the demihuman gods thankfully and of course kender) was a display of all the strange and majestic glory that were the weirdnesses of 1st edition...

Barbarians who could strike magical beings with a big stick
LG solely Paladins and their Chaotic Evil counterparts (never printed out of dungeon until now)
Female Dwarves with beards
Mages who can't use weapons unless dual classes beyond knives etc.

In a very real way AD&D the system is as rich a fantasy world as Middle Earth or Narnia inhabited by a host of creatures more detailed and more vivid than anyone can imagine.

Whereas you see a Wizard not being able to be rich at start or the inability to play Elven paladins as limiting, I see them as part of Dungeons and Dragons flavor as a game just as surely as the Brujah are.
