IMHO D&D has become its own genre. While it fails to emulate any genre found in literature or cinema it does have a clearly distinguishable profile that many people enjoy to play. It has created a paradigm of roleplaying separate from and not comparable to other RPGs.
I think people play D&D because they enjoy this system, not because it is a good emulation of "high fantasy" (which it isn't).
