...It could also very well be used in an Modern-day Horror setting: A serial killer whose mark is placing a pumpkin on the head of his married female victims, all found in bizarre locations. They have all cheated on their husbands, and have paid a terrible price...
The imagery can be made more ghastly (hearts instead of heads, for example) and more similar halloween rhymes and folk tales can be used to find the serial killer.
