One thing I have noticed over the past couple of years... the complaints leveled against d20 usually boil down to complaints against Dungeons & Dragons, which is fine, but while D&D is a d20 game, not all d20 games are D&D. Take a look at excellent games like Spycraft, and its plain to any but the most obtuse game fan that d20 as a system isn't that bad.
The primary trouble is D&D is so ubiquitous. To the general public, D&D=d20. D&D also has all sorts of baggage which clouds the mind and affects "objective" judgement (objective in quotes because, ultimately, it all boils down to a matter of taste, which is subjective).
If you give me a good setting, and mecahnics that don't force me to break suspension of disbelief or immersion too strongly, you've got a winner in my eyes. Good luck to you.
