I find that even bad game fiction is better than none. Anything the game developer can do to draw us into his world. Good writing is very hard, but mediocre writing can be fun if it is fully focussed on painting a picture of the game world.
Writer's Digest puts out a good book on teaching short story writing essentials. It breaks down how to tell a story in 1000 words or less and the basics of the short story craft. I recommend it to anyone writing game fiction.
