I'm about to describe to you one of the most statistically unlikely female gamer experiences ever.
I started role playing in college. I went to an all female college, and played with (you guessed it) all female players and a female GM. I didn't know anything about gamer culture or the mystique of the female gamer, all I knew was rather than going out, getting drunk, and shacking up with some mystery man, I spent every Friday night for 4 years with 7 to 10 other females pretending to adventure in Planescape.
Just to add to the surreal quality, all of us except for one had skipped high school. (So we ranged in age between 13 and 17 when we started playing.)
The neatest thing about playing with other females, especially in my formative years, was being able to explore new types of behaviour and attitudes that I wasn't brave enough to try in real life. Of course, I think the first party we put together had an average charisma of 15.5 and an average strength of 10... which led us to play intrigue/diplomatic games rather than the typical hack-and-slash. I'm not 6'2" in real life, nor do I possess a charisma of 17, but after 4 years of pretending to be this big, confident, sexy female I didn't feel all that uncomfortable any more. (Thanks DM for never ever letting me just roll for persuade - without you I'd have gotten a lot fewer drinks at the bar.)
