Well I think such debates are not pointless; it is true that innovative stuff appears every day, yet DD-like play is much present.
Sergio is right when saying Vampire is often played like DD with different powers. And you may see on these RPG.net forums the great number of gamers who'd rather play DD than innovative games.
Teenagers, particularly, are more interested in killing orcs than dying of a cancer. Wargames and DD-like rpgs are the easiest ways to introduce them to the hobby. And they make a great number of future adult gamers, who may or not be interested in more serious issues.
You are right when saying game designers might be more ambitious, but it is an error to think DD-like gaming only belongs to the 80s.
Actually most new games can be innovative; yet they have a rules system, and an approach to problem-solving issues. They are designed to please both classical DD gamers, and romantic innovators.
(I won't give other examples than Vampire, as other examples I might find are french games, which I know better)
