While I tend to agree with the general pop wisdom that if you need real religion, it can only be found in a Catholic church, there are plenty of other holy sites usable that might not square with your descriptions (ie holy water at the font). Temples, mosques, and shrines all fit the bill just as well. And any church built after the rise of urban zoning and planning will not have a cemetery close by!
PS Catholic priests don't carry around their crosses for random blessings. It's not a spell component, you know....Most things, including the transubstantiation rite, are blessed with their hands.
