OK, I too don't think it's right that immersive or storytelling or "Narrative" role playing it held in high regard while "roll-playing" it the butt of jokes. I do however understand why this is so.
Almost any chump can roll some dice, compare some numbers, do a quick math calculation (with a pocket calculator), and look up the results on a chart.
Not everybody can play freeform without refering to numbers using method acting techniques and putting the story above all else, trusting the GM implicately without any form of rules. *AND* everybody has a good time. In fact I'll bet it's very few people who actually attempt this and even fewer who come back for more.
Come on, let's face it. My friends and I don't always agree what's a good movie or not. Why would we all enjoy a story we make co-operatively together?
Immersive role playing is a lofty goal, but you are correct a more realistic is a balance between the two. But flame wars can't be fought over happy mediums. Only extremes.
