Talk about setting up a straw man. What, pray tell, requires that a story-driven game not focus on the characters? You illustrate the idiocy of this proposition yourself when you note that you realized that the best /STORIES/ were those that focused on the characters.
Also, given the hoops that White Wolf is jumping through in terms of restructuring their game world to more fully place the focus of the game on the players, your contention that the Storyteller system is all about steamrolling characters through pre-determined plotlines is just silly.
