I remember my first-ever Gm-ing experience. I convinced two associates in my Chemistry class to come over to my house one weekend and play Cyberpunk 2020. Boy, was I a twit. I was 16.
The climax of the game was set in an alley, where the PCs were due to be surrounded on all sides by four different factions of gun-toting thugs. The climax hinged on the fact that their bullet-proof car, represented by a little Matchbox model, was too big to fit into the alley. Thus, they would be forced to enter on foot.
Ha! Unfortunately, I had mapped out the alley on a piece of graph paper, and drawn the alley just big enough for the little model car to slip into. Not knowing that I was planning a devious twist of fate, one of the players nonchalantly moved the little car into the drawn alley and made a "screech" noise to signal the brakes being applied. I was dumbfounded for several moments and had no idea what to do.
I had meant to give my players some representation of what was going on, but hadn't bothered to measure the size of the map as compared to the size of the model.
Oops.
I did get better.
Cheers,
Scott L
