Then, because miniatures are expensive, the comparison of RPGs to wargaming, or just plain laziness miniatures became used less and less. That kind of detail is important, in and out of combat settings, and yet now it is little used.

1) Miniatures are not important out of combat. There simply is no need to know where everyone is setting in a restaurant. While detail out of combat is important, miniatures are not needed.

2) If you focus your games on roleplaying and not combat, setting up miniatures for combat is very intrusive and time consuming. Nothing disrupts the flow of the game, breaking the wall between player and character, than having to bring out a bunch of game aids.

3) Miniatures are never right. As you mentioned, you could never get the right miniature for your character. Since miniatures don't need to look like your characters to show position, facing, etc. you might as well use dice or other markers to show where everyone is.

Now, the rest of the article brings up some good points about communication and detail, but the lead-in was completely flat and misleading. Even the good points were more "ya, duh" then "gee, I never thought of that"
