its important for the players to have a full understanding of whats going on around them, things like NPC descriptions can be important as well.

once i was playing vampire, and my character was returning to his haven just before dawn when the GM tells me a man steps out of the shadows, and hes all dressed in black (really, who isnt all in black in a vampire game) he told me that he had come to kill me. I figured i could take him, so i went on the attack. the next thing i know the GM says he pulls out a machine gun and fires, I got wasted

if my gm had mentioned a seemingly insignificant fact like the fact the guy was wearing a long black trenchcoat i may have thought twice about taking him on alone. after all you can hide all kinds of imposing weapons under a trenchcoat.
