Author: Noblex the Horse (---.201.6) Date: 06-09-2003 10:28 On the subject of group communication in the last coulumn: "Don't be afraid to step out of character and say, "This scene rocks!" or "That was cool!" about a line of dialogue. Also don't be afraid to say, "I'd like for things to pick up...it's starting to slow down", or "I'm not really into the intrigue stuff". Applause and criticism are fine, and in fact, a good way to get more of what you like. Likewise, GMs shouldn't be afraid to say, "I don't know, gimme a minute" or "Hmm, I'm stumped, got any ideas?"" Most of the time when my group is playing, we make allowances for players and especially GM's to develop their own things and their own stories for us. Just because one player might be getting tired of something doesn't mean the others are not haveing the best moment of the night. While the game is in progress, I feel it is rather overly aggresive to tell other players how they should be playing or what you don't like. You can't please everybody all the time. I feel post game comments are the best. GMs can model things in a certain direction for the next session of play, and it allows the players to narratively build thing together without being halted by comments. And about Roleplaying being the only thing that counts: Don't underestimate the simple joys of rolling dice or drawing a map or thinking up new uses for spells. Roleplaying is the main event for the session but sometimes players just wan't to @#$%& stuff up with swords and guns. And it is OK to enjoy those aspects of the session. I really did like most of the points listed and I do think the most important task for the GM is to make sure that each player has a way to develop and use their charcter for the evening in a way that they will enjoy.
