Nice column, indeed. Two comments, though:

"The only thing you need to be careful about is making sure that you convey the character's inner conflict between the two motivations.
Such a character either ends with one motivation or the other winning out, or being destroyed in the process. Either way, the inner conflict of such a character is important to the game"

You only consider the case of conflicting motivations but there's the opposite situation of converging motivations. Think, for instance, a situation where A is motivated by love to B and selfless compassion for the suffering of others. Now, suppose that B looses both his kidneys due to a sickness. A's two motivations may work together, each reinforcing the other, and lead A to donate a kidney to B.

The second point is that you don't acknowledge the fact that some games attempted to handle motivations. It would be interesting if you provided your views about the way games like D&D (with its aligment system), Pendragon, etc. handle it. I would particularly like to know what you think about games that have mechanics to handle it since you don't propose specific mechanics for the effect. Of course, you promise to go at it next time, so I'll have to wait for it.
