One note about model railroad shops --
Those that HAVE survived offer SERVICE. I shop at my FLMRRS because I get info, HONEST opinions - yes, the owner has told me NOT to buy things, for clear reasons - helpful hints, news, etc. I can special order a $200 locomotive with putting no money down, and since I'm an established customer he does so gladly - and when it arrives, he'll hold it a couple weeks till payday.
And if I buy something and it's defective, the owner makes it right, no questions or difficulties. HE takes it up with the manufacturer.
Repeat nationwide.
Also, they are more and more very small specialty shops. You are completely right that the 'general hobby shop' is getting out of model railroad stuff.
Don't know how it directly translates to gaming, but since you mentioned it and I do have some knowledge, I thought I'd chime in.
